The question of what clothes we put on our bodies should be simple, fun, easy. But it is often weaponized and subject to social control. For example:
Women and queer folks are told that if they’re not “dressing appropriately” or showing too much skin, they’re putting out an open invitation for harassment.
Trans folks are told that if they’re not wearing the kind of clothes stereotypically associated with their gender identity, they’re “faking” or “confused”.
Black and brown men are told loose-fitting clothes, like hoodies or baggy jeans, make them look threatening, criminal, or gang-involved.
Sometimes people of marginalized identities have to squeeze themselves inside the boxes we’re given to stay safe. It’s not about conforming; in some cases, it’s about literal survival.
But when it is possible, it’s a beautiful act of resistance to ignore the noise of other people’s false stories about you and dress however makes you feel comfortable, happy and at home in your skin.
