“Whore”, defined: sex worker. But if you look up “whore” in any dictionary, the definition is almost always followed by words like “derogatory”, “offensive”, or “disparaging”.
Sex worker is (or should be) a neutral term to describe a professional occupation, just like calling someone a nurse or plumber or librarian.
And when used as a term for someone outside the profession, it can be understood as equivalent to playfully calling a lay person a “counselor” when they’re offering good advice.
So let’s redefine:
“Whore”: someone whose work includes using sexuality to help heal, educate, fulfill fantasies, or release shame, trauma or loneliness.
“Acting like a whore”: someone who is sexually confident and open enough that they could be a sex worker.
At Cliff Media, we don’t shy away from the (beautiful!) reality that producing porn means we’re a bunch of whores, and we intentionally refer to the leadership team as the “Whore’s Nest” to reclaim this word.
We also lovingly fuck in solidarity with sex workers doing all kinds of work, including street and lot work, full service, camming, content creation, porn, and more.
And we hope for a future in which sex workers everywhere experience respect, dignity, safety and freedom.
